With a variety of terrain, from mountains and open meadows to aspen groves and heavily timbered evergreen slopes, people who find adventure in challenging the outdoors love The High Lonesome Ranch.
This rugged region is home to some of the nation's most desirable big game animals. Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer mature to world-class trophy proportions. Every year hunters get honest opportunities to harvest mature trophy game animals while enjoying professional guides, superb meals and comfortable lodging. Come join us next season for an outstanding fair chase hunt.
 The Hunting Experience
Here at the High Lonesome Ranch we are proud of the fact that we have spoiled many a veteran big game hunter by providing a once in a lifetime fair chase opportunity to harvest a mature trophy animal. The High Lonesome Ranch lands are a natural draw to all species of big game. In addition, we irrigate and farm numerous fields that deer and elk cannot resist. Our valley and surrounding mountains are home to elk, bears, mountain lions, turkeys, bighorn sheep and, of course, magnificent mule deer.
Our attentive guides have decades of hunting experience in Colorado, particularly in the Dry Fork Creek and Roan Creek areas near DeBeque, Colorado. Your guide will do all he can to ensure that you have the hunt of a lifetime.
At High Lonesome you have the opportunity to hunt from one of our beautiful guest cabins or at our High Ranch camp. The guest cabins are located throughout the main ranch and the High Ranch camp takes you right into the middle of all the action at 9000 feet.
Regardless of where you stay on The High Lonesome Ranch, your hunting experience will be made comfortable by our conscientious and courteous staff. We maintain exclusive hunting facilities and only allow a maximum of four hunters a week on each of our ranch areas. In addition, we ensure superior personal service with one guide serving every hunter, professionally managed lands and available preference vouchers, if desired. In our ongoing efforts to provide the best hunting experience, we harvest only mature trophy mule deer and elk. Many are of such outstanding antler proportions that most hunters may never again in their lives see, let alone harvest, such outstanding trophy animals.
A Word About Our Mulies
Great mule deer hunting results from good genetics, excellent nutrition and mature herds. Here on the ranch we are fortunate to have trophy size animals in the 30 inch plus range providing a solid breeding population. These animals grow larger each year since we have aggressively increased the size and quality of available food sources for the last 5 years and we limit the harvest. With mule deer growing their largest racks between 5 and 8 years of age, we should see more superb specimens in the next couple of years. Already we have seen at least one animal in the 40 inch range!
 Archery
The archery season begins in August and goes well into September. This is also the time of year when our bull elk begin their annual rutting rituals. Typically, the larger bulls will move in with the cow herds and begin collecting their breeding harem. As the rut progresses, the bulls become very aggressive, bugling often and sparring with other bulls for dominance. A variety of elk calls can be extremely effective. This is when our archery hunters have their best opportunity to get in close to the big bulls. There is no greater thrill in elk hunting than to be in close with a huge bugling bull elk, full of fight and arrogance, and watch and listen as he closes the distance on you, the target of his aggression.
Other game, including mule deer, are also available to bow hunters. Hunting mule deer on the ranch with a bow presents the ultimate challenge. If you are interested in learning more about this type of hunt, please contact us.
Muzzleloader
Our muzzleloading rifle elk and deer hunts are on a special Colorado State License. The elk hunt takes place in September during the peak of the elk rut. If you enjoy hunting with a muzzleloading rifle and desire the ultimate opportunity to harvest a mature trophy bull elk, give us a call at The High Lonesome Ranch. We will be happy to assist you in applying for your license and, if you get drawn, we will do our best to ensure you get that trophy bull of your dreams. Muzzleloaders also stand a great chance of shooting a trophy mule deer during the September season since the deer are not spooky and have seen little or no pressure.
More About Colorado Hunting Licenses
Colorado's hunting regulations can be somewhat confusing to first-time hunters. Most licenses are limited and based on a draw system for specific units. While we have some landowner tags available for the ranch, all High Lonesome Ranch Big Game Hunters should apply for a license by the April deadline as well. Units 30 and 31 which encompass the ranch are highly desirable hunting areas. Visit the Colorado Division of Wildlife site for complete information.
 Rifle
Our record of accomplishment at The High Lonesome Ranch speaks for itself when it comes to producing mature trophy bull elk for our hunters. Come and enjoy legendary Colorado big game hunting with a special touch of elegance. In this region of Colorado, mule deer are world famous for their enormous antlers. The High Lonesome Ranch also offers hunters an unsurpassed opportunity to hunt trophy mule deer. For both consistent quality and quantity of trophy bucks, the famed Douglas Pass/Roan Creek drainage of DeBeque, Colorado cannot be matched. The High Lonesome Ranch is the heart of this great region.
Seasons
The big game season runs from August through November. Your choice of weapon will determine the month of your hunt. There are 4 modern firearm seasons at The High Lonesome Ranch, running from mid-October through mid-November. The last three elk seasons usually run concurrently with a deer season. Be sure to check the dates for next season at the Colorado Division of Wildlife or contact us.
Combination elk and mule deer hunts are available for archery, muzzleloading and modern firearm hunters when the seasons are concurrent and when a tag or voucher is available. Our hunts are conducted in Colorado Units 30 or 31.
For the latest hunting seasons and license information, visit the Colorado Division of Wildlife website or call them at (303) 297-1192.
